About
I first had a go at Hang Gliding in 1976. I bought a Sussex Delta Sailwings "Ridge Rider" from a colleague and friend who was moving up to a Wills Wing SST100B. I kept the Ridge Rider for 2 1/2 years, building up about 15 hours from 80 or so flights. I flew a fair amount in the Lake district, some in Wales and quite a lot in Northern Lancashire. The glider handled well but had a limited speed range meaning soaring was only accomplished on special days. I particularly didn't like the scary seated harness made from webbing that always made me feel as though I might tip out backwards. An illness meant I had to give up driving in 1978 so the glider went too.
I managed to reclaim my driving licence and PPL ratings some years later and did some gliding too, but never looked at hang gliding again until 2010. I was browsing the internet in a "I wonder what happened to old...." moment and there was my old hang glider, on the web. It was no good, I was hooked again, and had to take the cure.
I booked a course with John Barratt and bought a Malibu 188 from Simon Murphy (who I swear has not cut his hair since 1976). I've flown mostly on the South Downs with the occasional foray into Devon and Shropshire. Recently I've been towing with Suffolk Coastal Floaters. Towing makes a good contrast with hill flying and it gives you practice with landings and coring thermals without the ever present risk of going over the back or hitting the front. I recommend it. SCFHGC is a small, but very active club with no paragliders :) and a strong XC ethic.
